Everyone gets bitten or stung by an insect at some point in their lives. While
in most cases, bites are not lethal, there is no doubt that they are
uncomfortable and that their effects can be lasting. Of course, the effects of
every type of bug bite are different. If extreme symptoms are occurring a
physician should be called. However, here is some information on how to treat
insect bites in their most common forms.
On hot summer sidewalks and in
the depths of the woods, we have all seen fire ants roaming in large,
intimidating packs. Though we may not know exactly what they are capable of,
their red appearance gives us the hint that we do not want them to touch us.
Their bites can be extremely itchy and painful and even cause open sores. Since
they travel in packs, it is not uncommon to suffer from several bites at
once.
What you want to do in the case of a fire ant bite is first make
sure all the ants are off of the body. Then, make crushed aspirin or meat
tenderizer into a paste with a bit of water and rub it on the affected area to
neutralize the venom. Anti-itch cream can then be applied to stop the itching,
which is one of the first symptoms that will occur. Finally, to kill the pain,
soak the affected area in salt water and apply antiseptic. You should also cover
any open wounds.
Most are also familiar with other types of insect bites
such as those from mosquitoes or fleas. Flea bites usually occur in high numbers
and, though they may not be initially very itchy, will get quite itchy with
time. Mosquito bites are likely to be on exposed areas of skin and will create
an extremely noticeable red, swollen bump. It is sometimes difficult to resist
itching these affected areas, so they should be treated to prevent doing
so.
Scratching the bites can be dangerous, so you want to rid the body of
the itch first. This can be done with an antihistamine taken orally or with
anti-itch creams and lotions. Be careful, though, because if the bites have been
scratched open, the creams may sting. Especially if the wound opens, wash it
with warm, soapy water regularly and keep it covered to prevent infection. If it
does become infected, take over-the-counter antibiotic ointment.
Bug
bites are extremely uncomfortable and unfortunate, but everyone experiences them
at some point. It is best to simply always be prepared by having antihistamines,
anti-itch creams, bandages, and antibiotic ointments on hand when you know you
will be outdoors. The most important piece of knowledge about how to treat
insect bites is to prevent infection by keeping wounds cleaned and covered at
all times.
