The obstruction to breathing is largely due to spasm
Choking is an abnormal breathing condition that is occurs when there抯 the mechanical obstruction of the airway from the environment into the lungs. It抯 a common incident at all ages. It prevents respiration to this or that extend depending on whether it is complete or partial.
The obstruction to breathing is largely due to spasm. Choking can be caused by breathing disorders that result in obstruction of the airway, physical obstruction of the airway by some foreign bodies. A person may or may not have a fit of coughing. His face and neck are usually congested and may become livid. If breathing is not restored his face turns blue (cyanosis) from lack of oxygen. Violent and alarming attempts at inspiration may be made.
Choking treatment primarily include removing any foreign body and relieving the spasm or, if necessary, getting air to the lungs past the foreign body if this cannot be removed. Remove immediately any obvious obstruction a lump of food, false teeth. If the obstruction is thought to be in the windpipe, immediately strike a choking person three or four sharp blows between the shoulders and after clearing any obstruction from the throat, give him artificial respiration, if necessary.
The situation is a bit different if there抯 a choking infant or a child. You will need to hold the infant up by the legs, smack him smartly three or four times between the shoulders. This should dislodge any foreign body. In case of a child lay him over your knee, head downwards and give him or four sharp slaps between the shoulders to dislodge the obstruction. Afterwards give him artificial respiration if it is necessary.
Abdominal thrusts are another type of treatment. They involve artificial coughing which occur when a helper stands behind a patient and uses his hands to exert pressure on the bottom of the diaphragm.
